The UK experienced temperatures above average for this time of year in recent weeks
High pressure continues to dominate the UK weather through this week ahead, bringing plenty of dry and settled conditions for many. However, the Met Office said there will be stronger winds at times, chilly nights in some areas and a growing chance of showers later in the week.
The UK national forecaster said stronger winds will develop throughout today. It said: “The strengthening wind will be most noticeable along the southern coast of England and across parts of England and Wales, where gusts could be near gale force in more exposed locations, especially over hills and higher ground. Central and northern Scotland will see lighter winds by comparison.
“Temperatures will again depend on shelter and wind direction. In sheltered western areas, values could reach the high teens or even around 20°C, while eastern coastal areas remain cooler.”
Tomorrow will be another day of largely dry and settled weather, before conditions turn more unsettled on Friday. The forecast said: “By Friday, high pressure continues to weaken, allowing more unstable air to move in from the west. The day is likely to start dry and bright for many parts of England and eastern Scotland, though it will remain breezy, particularly along eastern coasts.
“Where showers do develop, a few could be heavier, bringing the risk of downpours and isolated thunderstorms. Despite this, it will still feel warm in any sunshine, with highs of around 21 or 22C possible in parts of southern England, and high teens more widely elsewhere.”
In the BBC Weather forecast for Liverpool today it said: “This morning will see lengthy sunny spells and a few patches of cloud. Thicker cloud will build in during the late afternoon, but some late sunny spells will break through the cloud by the evening.
“This evening will have late sunny spells and patchy cloud at first. Tonight, it will cloud over along with the local risk of light showers or spots of rain. Cloud breaking up once again by dawn.”
In its outlook for tomorrow, the forecaster added: “Tomorrow will start partly cloudy with one or two showers possible, these light in nature. As the day progresses, it will turn mostly cloudy with heavier and more frequent showers. A little warmer.”
Looking ahead to Friday and into Sunday it said: “Friday will see areas of cloud, sunny breaks and scattered showers, these most likely and heavier during the afternoon. Clouding over with further showers developing overnight into Saturday.
“Turning dry through the day with some sunny spells into the evening. A breezy day. Sunday looks to see sunshine at first, but it should turn cloudy in the evening. Trending cooler.”
The Met Office has provided a long-range forecast from May 10 to May 19, indicating how conditions will develop as the month progresses.
It said: “Whilst largely settled conditions are possible towards the north, there are likely to be some rain or showers across portions of England and Wales, which could be heavy and locally thundery. However, there is a slight chance these wetter conditions could remain over the nearby continent.
“Deeper into next week and beyond, there may be a tendency for more widely unsettled conditions across the UK, with some rain or showers at times. Whilst some occasional warm days are possible, temperatures overall are likely to be near or below average, especially in the north, with an ongoing risk of overnight rural frost.”
