Arne Slot’s Liverpool future remains a subject of debate despite the Reds winning their last two Premier League matches and moving clear of Chelsea in fifth place

Jamie Carragher is hearing that Arne Slot will stay at Liverpool as long as they qualify for the Champions League. The Reds are currently seven points clear of Chelsea in the fifth and final spot in next season’s league phase.

Beating Everton in the first Merseyside Derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium saw them extend their advantage over the Blues after Manchester United beat them at Stamford Bridge. It also helped to continue quelling the speculation about Slot’s future.

Consecutive Premier League wins have turned the tide. As did the positive performance at Anfield despite their 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Champions League qualification for the third consecutive season now appears likely. That could secure Slot’s job through this summer even after such a disappointing Premier League title defence after a dream debut season.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “Arne Slot’s job has been spoken about all season. We’ve spoken about it a lot on Monday Night Football.

“There’s probably a split in the Liverpool supporters over whether he should stay or go. But the noises I am hearing is Slot will be the Liverpool manager next season if they can secure Champions League qualification, which they look like doing right now.”

After the derby win, Carragher said: “The result is absolutely huge for Liverpool when you consider the Chelsea result yesterday.”

The Reds now need nine more points from their final five Premier League matches to confirm themselves a place in the top five, regardless of the results Chelsea or anyone else below them achieves. Next up, they host Crystal Palace before heading to Old Trafford to play Manchester United.

Chelsea then visit Anfield in a match that could ultimately decide who finishes in fifth. Aston Villa are this season’s penultimate opponents, before Brentford are on Merseyside on the final day.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.

Carragher added after the derby: “When that board went up for 11 minutes, I’d have shook [hands] with anyone and taken a point from a Liverpool point of view. With the situation with the goalkeeper, Everton were a little bit more threatening. Liverpool were a small team towards the end of that game, and I was fearful of set-pieces.

“When you think of how Liverpool have won this game – two of the absolute legends of the club have done it, they won’t be here much longer, Salah and probably Van Dijk in 12 months’ time.

“Two of the absolute greats. Salah has done it again against Liverpool’s biggest rivals, as he always does. Against Everton or Man Utd, you can always rely upon him.”
