Arne Slot and Liverpool’s players were left fuming when referee Andy Madley allowed Daniel Munoz’s goal for Crystal Palace at Anfield to stand

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean believes Andy Madley made the correct call by allowing Daniel Munoz’s goal against Liverpool to stand. The Reds were 2-0 up thanks to first-half strikes from Alexander Isak and Andy Robertson when Munoz got his side back into the game with just under 20 minutes remaining.

However, the goal was certainly controversial as Munoz lobbed the ball into an empty net with Freddie Woodman down injured. Liverpool’s players and Arne Slot were left fuming by Madley’s call to allow the goal to stand, but Dean believes he made the right decision.

“It can’t not be a goal,” he said on Sky’s Gillette Soccer Special. “There’s nothing else you can do… even though Woodman’s injured, he gets back up to try and stop the ball anyway and goes back down. It’s a goal.”

Giving his take, Woodman, who was making his first Premier League start for the Reds, said: “The grass was really dry and my knee got stuck in the ground. I didn’t know what to do. It didn’t punish us in the end and the three points are massive.”

While team-mate Robertson said: “I was closest to him and I don’t think he looked up before he hit the ball.

“In a game like this, you just hope it doesn’t punish you. When these things happen, you want the right result. It’s one of these things, I don’t think there’s anyone to blame.”

On the goal, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said: “It was a difficult situation because he made a big save but the ball goes to Munoz. Everything goes so quickly.

“He could continue the game until the end and that’s why we think it was the right decision. I think that is was OK. When you watch it on TV. It’s on the edge, to be honest.

“He makes the save, then tries to get up then he raises his arm but Munoz is already taking the finish. If he hits his head then the game has to be stopped. It was the right decision I think.”
