I found that an 89p Home Bargains kitchen drain unblocker that helped clear my kitchen sink blockage when other methods failed.
A blocked drain is every homeowner’s worst nightmare, regardless of whether it’s your shower, bathroom or kitchen sink that’s affected. When it’s the kitchen sink, though, the problem can be particularly unpleasant, as foul odours can quickly develop – the last thing you want when you’re cooking up a storm.
After seven months of sluggish draining, my kitchen sink eventually began emitting a distinctly unpleasant smell that simply couldn’t be ignored.
My first port of call was a pair of natural cleaning remedies. The tried-and-tested white vinegar and baking soda combination proved unsuccessful, as did soda crystals – despite having previously worked a treat on my blocked shower drain.
With natural methods exhausted, I reluctantly turned to specialist chemical products, and it was here that a surprising find from Home Bargains saved the day.
Given that it’s a kitchen sink, I’m always wary of using harsh chemicals due to the overpowering fumes they can produce.
Nevertheless, with both natural remedies having failed, there was little choice but to go down the chemical route. Before cracking on, I made sure to fling open both the window and door to allow for adequate ventilation.
My first chemical attempt was the £4 Buster Kitchen Drain Unblocker, which disappointingly left the sink still draining at a snail’s pace, with the unpleasant odour persisting.
I also grabbed an off-brand sink and drain unblocker from Home Bargains for a mere 89p, though admittedly my expectations weren’t particularly high given the bargain price tag.
Donning rubber gloves as the bottle directed, I began by scooping out some of the standing water from the drain, then tipped half the bottle down the plughole, allowing it to work its magic for an hour.
Following this, I rinsed the drain through with hot water, and not not boiling. When I switched the tap on, the sink was draining more quickly than before, though it hadn’t quite returned to its usual speed.
I opted to use the remaining solution, and this time I let it sit for two hours before giving it a flush.
Returning to check on the drain afterwards, I found the unpleasant odour had vanished, and when I tested the tap again, the water drained away normally.
To prevent my kitchen drain from becoming seriously blocked in future, I’ll be popping to Home Bargains to pick up more of this sink and drain gel.
