The man broke into a house in Rock Ferry and ate the owner’s food before claiming he was homeless and taking ‘lager and a cig’ from a neighbour
Police are still searching for a man who broke into a Rock Ferry home and helped himself to the owner’s food. Merseyside Police was called to St Paul’s Road in Rock Ferry on Saturday, April 18 where a man entered a property on the street and ate some food, while inside the kitchen.
The man then left the house and “hid inside a tent in the garden”. In the early hours of the next day, at around 2.30am, a woman who lives next door, heard a man shouting for help and let him into her house.
The 58-year-old previously told the ECHO how she thought she was helping a man in difficulty, but really he had more sinister motives. She said she heard a “commotion” coming from her neighbour’s garden and went to check her neighbour was OK.
She heard the man shout for help, claiming he was stuck inside the garden. He told her he was homeless and had been sheltering in a tent. Wanting to help the man, who claimed he had “nowhere to go”, the mum, who does not want to be named, invited him into her home and gave him “a lager and a few cigs”.
Once inside, the man, who claimed he was 41 and from Liverpool, revealed he’d been “grafting” houses all night. Knowing he meant stealing, she says she immediately told the man to leave and he did.
She said: “I warned him he’s not robbing from my house and chucked him out.” The following morning the mum spoke with her neighbour who said he had found a man in his kitchen at around 9pm on Saturday, April 18.
The mum said: “My neighbour leaves his front door open. He usually sits out there on his mobility scooter, you can see he is vulnerable, he has a ramp outside his home.
“At around 9pm on Saturday, he heard someone in his kitchen. He went to check what was going on and found a man in there eating his food.
“He kicked him out and went to phone the police but the man begged him not to and he didn’t. After he’d said he’d been grafting houses all night we decided to phone the police because he’s clearly been targeting houses in our area.”
She added: “My neighbour is petrified, he’s vulnerable. No matter what people think we look after each other in Rock Ferry we’re a community, we all look out for one another.” She wants to warn people to be vigilant.
Merseyside Police launched an investigation. In a statement the force said: “On Sunday, April 19 we received a report of a burglary at a house on St Paul’s Road that occurred on Saturday evening.
“It was reported that a man entered the property and ate some food whilst he was inside the kitchen. The man then left the house and hid inside a tent in the garden.
“It was later reported that at around 2.30am on Sunday, April 19 a woman heard a man shouting for help and let him into her house on the same road. The woman then asked the man to leave. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and an investigation is ongoing in the area.”
