Darwin Nunez has arrived in Portugal as Liverpool prepare to bid an emotional farewell to Diogo Jota. The Uruguay international was pictured arriving at Capela da Ressurreicao in Gondomar on Friday evening for the public wake of Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

Jota and his 26-year-old sibling, who played for Portuguese side Penafiel, died on Thursday (July 3) after a tyre blew out on their car, resulting in a crash when attempting to overtake on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, according to local police.

The bodies of both footballers were returned to their native Portugal on Thursday evening ahead of a wake today and then a funeral service at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar (the Mother Church of Gondomar) tomorrow (Saturday, July 5).

Nunez is the first Liverpool player to pictured in Gondomar; however, representatives from both the club and Fenway Sports Group are already in the town next to Porto

Pictured at the wake on Friday were club staff Richard Hughes, Lee Nobes, Jonathan Power and Amit Pannu, as were Michael Edwards and Julian Ward, who both work for FSG.

Jota’s teammates at Liverpool, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara, have also been pictured arriving at the wake, as have Portugal internationals Bernardo Silva, Diogo Dalot, Joao Moutinho, Jose Fonte and Andre Silva.

Paying tribute to Jota on Thursday, Nunez said: “There are no words of comfort for so much pain.

“I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field.

“I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I’m sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children.

“Q.E.P.D Diogo y Andre”.

Q.E.P.D. stands for “Que en paz descanse” in Spanish, which translates to “May he/she rest in peace” in English.
