A woman in her 60s is also in critical condition after the serious collision on the A59
Three individuals, including two five-year-old children, remain in a critical state after a devastating collision on the A59 near Gisburn.
The incident, which occurred just before 4pm on Thursday (May 21) close to the Strawberry Fields junction, involved a Skoda Karoq and a Volkswagen Golf R. A substantial emergency response team arrived at the location, with the carriageway shut for approximately six hours.
According to Lancashire Police, the Skoda’s driver, a woman in her 60s, alongside two young passengers – a boy and girl both aged five – sustained ‘severe injuries‘ and were transported to hospital where their condition remains ‘critical’. The VW Golf’s driver, a man in his 20s, was also hospitalised with serious injuries.
LancsLive previously reported that three air ambulances touched down in a nearby field, while the emergency response comprised three fire appliances, nine ambulance units and 12 police vehicles. The A59 remained shut between the Hellifield Road junction and Yarlside Lane junction to facilitate collision investigation procedures, with drivers advised to ‘avoid the area’.
No arrests were reported and the carriageway has now fully reopened. Officers are seeking witnesses and are requesting anyone with dashcam footage or information to make contact.
Sgt Anthony Beckett from the Roads Policing Unit stated: “First and foremost my thoughts are with the four people who suffered very serious injuries in this collision as they receive treatment and care in hospital. This was an horrendous collision involving two cars and involved a huge response from the emergency services.”, reports Lancs Live.
“As we investigate the collision, we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and for anyone who has dashcam footage to contact us. You might have dashcam footage which doesn’t show the collision but captures either of the cars involved shortly before it happened.
“Any information or footage which can help us, please get in touch. The A59 at Gisburn was closed for several hours while the injured people received treatment at the scene and for collision investigation work to be carried out.”
Officers are urging anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting log reference 0986 of May 21, or by emailing the Serious Collision Investigation Unit directly at [email protected]
