Jim Bennet was heading home for the day
It seemed to be an ordinary day, however it turned out to be anything but for this man. Jim Bennett, a Wirral coastguard rescue officer, had just finished some equipment checks at the Hoylake RNLI station at around 1.30pm on Monday, September 15.
As he was heading home he came across an unconscious man in cardiac arrest on Market Street, Hoylake. Outside of his coastguard duties, Jim also works in event medical cover and luckily had some of his own equipment in his personal vehicle.
Drawing on his experience, Jim immediately began CPR, administered oxygen and used a defibrillator. Thankfully, the man regained consciousness. Jim has since been in touch with the man and his family, who are happy to report that he is recovering well in hospital.
Jim said: “Knowing how to do CPR and use a defibrillator is a massive life skill — you just never know when you might need it. If you’re reading this and don’t feel confident, I’d really encourage you to get trained. One day, it could save someone’s life.”
A spokesperson for the Wirral Coastguard said: “Huge well done to Jim — a real example of how quick thinking and training can make a big difference. We are so proud of you. We wish the person involved and his family all the best.”
