A main road in Merseyside is set to close for one month, with gas mains replacement works scheduled to start next week on Monday, June 30. The works are planned for the section of Altcar Road between Church Road and Formby bypass and will cause traffic delays, according to a notice shared by Sefton Council.

The work will be carried out by Cadent who manage the gas supply in the area and engineers will be removing old pipes and replacing them with new ones. The energy firm said this will help support greener gas supplies in the future.

Cadent also warned customers to expect some disruption to their supply when works start: “We’ll have to turn off your gas supply during some of our works and may need access to your home, but our teams on site will be on hand to let you know more information.

The upgrade has been approved by the Highway Authority with digital signs in place to make motorists aware and to help them navigate the road.

Below a ‘road closure’ update on Sefton Council’s Facebook page this morning Monday June 23, the local authority confirmed the schedule of works.

Local residents and motorists were quick to comment on the post with some worried about the cumulative effect of other road works in the local vicinity.

Tom Carbery wrote: “Does this mean that for the majority of Formby residents, the southern and middle access roads to the area are affected by roadworks until Liverpool Road potentially re-opens on 5th July?

“Not only that, but the northern access to Formby is affected by roadworks on the bypass?

“I appreciate some of these issues are out of the council’s control, but next week is going to be awful for getting around the area.”

Mr Carbery added: “It’s a good job the beach car parks aren’t as accessible at the minute as that’s probably keeping some car visitors away, but you can see roads from the Cross House to the Grapes Hotel being really busy once the Altcar Road works start.”

These sentiments were shared by Carol Faulkner, who commented: “How can this be given the go ahead, when the Liverpool Road closure has been extended until 4/7/25.

“How do you expect the ever increasing volumes of cars etc. coming in and out of Formby to navigate their way?”

However, most of the irritation centred on the expected delays and the impact on the area and travel times. Mandy Smith said: “There’s going to be a lot of frustrated drivers in Formby. Will be a nightmare!!”

Marie Tholaw added: “Stay away from Formby for week or two, nightmare for Formby residents! It’s a nightmare there any normal day, this will be so frustrating!!!”
