Summer holidays are something to look forward to throughout the year. But despite the excitement that comes with going on holiday, for me the dread of packing can almost make me forget the joyful trip I am about to embark on.

The reason for this could be that I’m usually trying to fit a week’s worth of clothes into a rucksack to save on airline fees. It might also be that I’m incredibly indecisive.

Either way, I find the pre-planning element of holiday packing to be really stressful.

Taking both the decision element and the question of ‘how much do I really need’ out of the picture, is a handy numerical hack designed to save suitcase space.

The hack is named the 5,4,3,2,1 hack and is said to be the perfect way to pack for a longer holiday.

With a week-long holiday just around the corner and my bag still unpacked I decided to read up on this interesting method.

The hack which has been demonstrated by TikTok influencers involves packing five tops, four bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two dresses or layers, and one set of accessories.

It is based on the capsule wardrobe system which involves having a small number of staple pieces of clothing that can be easily styled with each other in different ways.

It is therefore important to bring clothes that are versatile and go with lots of different things.

This might involve packing basics instead of all statement pieces.

The hack has seen a few iterations online and some swapping out the dresses for jackets and the jewellery accessories for a bag.

While I think I would struggle to stick to just one bag for a holiday (I always opt for a practical bag like a rucksack plus a more stylish handbag) I think this method is a good place to start.

I would also argue that three pairs of shoes isn’t always feasible for a short trip. Though I understand the logic, I would go for two – a practical walking shoe plus a comfortable but elevated sandal.

Either way, having this handy guide in the back of my mind has eased some of the anxiety of the impending pack and will hopefully stop my suitcase from bursting at the seams.
