The video shows the exact view Jay shared footage of in the final hours before he vanished
Jay Slater’s mum has called a video recorded by the last person to see her son alive outside the very cottage where he vanished as “sick.” Jay Slater’s death was ruled as an accident after falling from a ravine in the Tenerife mountains, an inquest concluded last month.
The 19-year-old Oswaldtwistle teenager, who went missing in Tenerife last summer, was begged by a friend to get back to safety before he vanished on the morning of June 17. Jay had flown to Tenerife to attend the NRG music festival with his friends Lucy Law and Bradley Hargreaves, where they met up with friend Brandon Hodgson.
After the event, on June 17, Jay travelled with two men, Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas – known as ‘Rocky’ – who he’d met through Brandon in Tenerife, to an Airbnb in the Rural de Teno national park, when a few hours later he decided to walk back to the apartment he was staying in with his friends.
He called one of his friends saying he was lost, thirsty, and his phone had one per cent battery, but never arrived at the apartment. The apprentice bricklayer, was reported missing that morning and his disappearance sparked a huge search. After a month-long operation, Jay’s body was found in a ravine on July 15 last year, near to where his phone last pinged.
Jay had ventured off a mountain road down a dangerous ravine as he attempted the 14-hour walk back to where he was staying with Brad and Lucy. That fateful morning Jay told Mr Qassim he was going to catch a bus back to his apartment, the inquest on July 25 heard.
Mr Qassim told him no buses would be along that route. However, Jay said he had spoken to the woman who had asked Mr Qassim to move his car, and she had said there was one in 10 minutes. Later that morning, at around 8am, Jay’s smartwatch recorded him walking.
Lucy Law was the last person to speak to Jay. He called her and said his mouth was dry and he needed a drink and was frightened, his phone was on 2% at this point. Jay’s body was found 29 days after he went missing by two members of the Spanish mountain rescue group in the Juan Lopez ravine.
One month after an inquest finally revealed what happened to the teen new footage recorded by Stephen Roccas has received a flurry of criticism after he posted it on social media.
Rocky returned to the exact spot in Tenerife and took a nine-second clip of the rural mountainous view outside the rental cottage in Masca, the very cottage where Jay was last seen alive, reported Mirror.
The clip pans cross the same view Jay saw before he vanished and shared a clip of in June 2024, a video likely to haunt mum, Debbie Duncan forever. You can watch the footage, taken by Jay showing his final movements before he disappeared, here.
Dressed in a West Ham football shirt Rocky captioned the video: “Views” – along with two fire emojis and one of a mountain. It comes less than six weeks after Stephen refused to give evidence Jay’s inquest, which recorded a verdict of accidental death. There were several attempts to serve Stephen with a witness summons but he declined to take part.
Debbie Duncan slammed the video as “sick.” In response to the video, the mum said: “What is he trying to do? Rub our noses in it? Why has he even gone back there? What for? What’s he trying to prove? I don’t understand it.
“I would love to ask him some questions but I can’t as the inquest is over and it’s all done. But I really would like to know why he’s back there. I hope people start asking questions of him. The last year has been hell for us.”
He has faced a further backlash for the video, one social media follower wrote: “What ya trying to prove Rocky? This is bad taste?” while another added: “This is a bit sick.”
Unlike Stephen, Ayub did appear for the inquest at Preston Crown Court. Speaking in relation to Stephen, Coroner Dr James Adeley had said: “He is doing this of his own volition. As he is abroad, I cannot compel him to give evidence.”
Coroner Dr James Adeley also dismissed theories about a ‘stolen’ Rolex watch and a Snapchat picture of Jay with knives at Preston Crown Court last month.
