A newcomer to Liverpool visited a new club which is “rammed” every weekend

Is Liverpool a good night out? – JOE

A man set out to find out whether Liverpool is the best place in the country for a night out and ended up learning about Scouse identity. The city is known for its vibrant nightlife scene and this was showcased in a recent YouTube video by JOE Media.

In the episode, journalist Tom Usher went on a night out in town, attempting to discover if the city is “Britain’s best night out”. Tom spoke to Scousers about their thoughts on the city’s pubs and clubs as well as delving into Merseyside’s cultural identity.

Tom said he wanted to “drink like the locals” despite being a southerner, making visits to the likes of Peter Kavanagh’s, The Poste House and The Dispensary. He also made a visit to Gloria’s, which opened in September. You can watch the video in full here.

Taking the place of Mojo on Back Berry Street, the disco-themed venue usually has music from a live band on Friday and Saturday nights. Tom spoke to one of the band members, Michael Kountis, who issued his verdict on Liverpool’s nightlife scene. When asked what makes Liverpool stand out compared to the nightlife in other places, he said: “The People.”

Michael added: “I used to be in a band and used to tour all over. I’d go on nights out in Newcastle, London, all the student towns as well. I think (it’s) the people (here) – you’ll go on a night out on your own and you’ll meet a group of people and you just have a great night with them.

“I feel like you can find a good night out anywhere in Liverpool. Monday night is the Raz, Thursday night they’ve got karaoke at Motel with a live band. On a Friday, Saturday, this place (Gloria’s) is absolutely rammed.

“And then Sunday you can go to the Pogues (Mahone) around the corner and there’s live music on and you’re having a good time as well. I just think there’s a night out for everyone.”

However, Michael admitted going out during the week isn’t what it used to be. He said: “People live for the weekends. Midweek’s just gone. And I think that’s a cost of living thing – maybe people don’t want to do it. But this place on a weekend is rammed. All of the other places are rammed and then midweek’s just chill.”

Tom also asked partygoers what a wool is. Michael replied simply: “Anyone that doesn’t have a purple bin.” Tom seemed to be unaware of Liverpool’s famous bins and the claim they can determine whether you are a true Scouser.

Others disagreed with Michael’s however, with another Scouser telling Tom: “It’s where the motorway starts, the M62. If you go past that, towards where Ikea is, Warrington, Knowsley, that’s wool.

“If you go north and you go towards Skelmersdale, that’s wool. If you go south and you go towards Runcorn, that’s wool. And then if you cross the river, you’re a wool.”

Tom did not give a definitive verdict on whether he felt Liverpool was the best night out in the country. However, he did admit he had a “cracking night” and even got on the karaoke at Coopers on Cases Street, opposite Central Station.
