Conditions have been cold and wet across the UK recently

It has been a chilly and blustery weekend as showers and heavy rain fell across the UK. Temperatures were generally below average for this time of year. This week will be more pleasant, with warmer spells forecast by the Met Office. However, cold temperatures will still be felt.

On X, the Met Office shared a weather map, it was captioned: “If you’re not a fan of the cold, we may have some good news as it’s set to turn warmer for a time this week.” The start of the week will feel chilly for most but milder air moves in on Tuesday.

The Met Office said the mild air will be felt on Wednesday too. It explained: “Often cloudy with some drizzle. Longer spells of rain move into the northwest bringing some hill snow in Scotland.” Thursday will be a more settled day than Wednesday, staying dry for many.

In the Met Office outlook from Wednesday to Friday this week, it said: “Changeable over the next few days with largely cloudy skies. Spells of rain are likely at times with strong winds, and it will gradually turn colder towards the weekend.”

BBC Weather has shared its forecast for Liverpool this week. For today, the forecast said: “Today will start with mostly cloudy with some scattered showers. Later in the afternoon, it will turn dry and sunny spells will develop. Cloudy in the evening, however. A windy day.

Tomorrow’s forecast said: “Tomorrow will be milder. Cloudy in the morning with a few spells of light rain. Turning dry in the afternoon as cloud breaks and sunny spells develop.”

Further details for Wednesday to Friday explained: “Wednesday will see cloudy periods and sunny breaks to start. Turning cloudy later, with a few spells of rain moving in by the evening.

“Thursday will have a largely cloudy start but plenty of sunshine will develop in the afternoon and evening. Friday will be a cloudy and windy day with a few showers possible.”

March is the first month of meteorological spring and it arrives with the prospect of warmer weather to come. However, although winter is behind us, March can still produce frost or snow.

The Met Office said: “Statistically, you’re more likely to see snow in March in some parts of the UK than December – the first month of winter. For all the prospects of cold weather, the sun’s rays are gaining in strength as the sun rises ever higher in the sky along with an increasing day length from now until mid-summer.”

In a typical March, the Met Office expects to see around 15 days of ground frost, and on an average of just over seven days it expects to temperatures to fall to 0C or below, creating an air frost. These figures vary across the UK..

Sunshine hours see a dramatic increase during March, when compared with February, with the UK on average seeing over 100 hours of sunshine in an average March, helping to warm soils.
