All flights in and out of the airport have been suspended
Armed officers have arrived on the runway of a major European airport, with all incoming and outgoing flights suspended. Firefighters and other emergency services were also seen rushing to the tarmac at Krakow Airport, Poland, during Monday morning’s incident.
Airport officials released a statement which reads: “For safety reasons, flight operations to/from Kraków Airport are temporarily suspended. State services are taking action. Thank you for your understanding.” The airport, which bears the name of Pope John Paul II, declined to elaborate on the reasons behind the flight suspension.
Spokesperson Monika Chylaszek informed local press that the circumstances at the airport necessitated intervention from Poland’s Border Guard, reports the Daily Star. She confirmed that flight operations would recommence “soon”.
Flight tracking data from earlier on Monday revealed aircraft circling the airport, which ranks as Poland’s second busiest and welcomed a record 11.1 million passengers through its terminals in 2024. Multiple carriers including Ryanair, Buzz, easyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, and British Airways operate direct services to Krakow from the UK, with the city being a favoured choice for stag celebrations.
Several departures experienced delays at the aviation hub on Monday morning, affecting services to destinations including Varna, Copenhagen, Barcelona Girona and Cagliari. Incoming flights also faced disruption, with services from Copenhagen, Rimini, Edinburgh, Nice and Frankfurt all experiencing later-than-scheduled arrivals.
It remained unclear whether these delays were directly linked to the temporary operational suspension.
