A second weather warning for the region was put into place for Monday
Liverpool is under a double yellow weather warning for thunderstorms. The Met Office has issued alerts for much of the country this weekend as the weather becomes unsettled.
Today brings a mixed picture across the UK. While central and southern England face the greatest risk of thunderstorms, other areas may see drier and brighter conditions. Looking ahead to Sunday, the weather remains unsettled as the area of low pressure begins to move in from the southwest. This will bring further bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
The yellow weather warning covering Liverpool today has been in place from midnight and remains in place until 9pm this evening, July 19. The Met Office has warned of “Heavy rain, with some thunderstorms, may lead to disruption in places on Friday night and through much of Saturday.”
The weather agency says you should expect spray and “sudden flooding” that could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
It also warns that power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. Some communities might become cut off if roads flood.
Areas of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms will move northwestwards across a large swathe of central and eastern England through Friday night into Saturday. Rain will likely be torrential in places, bringing 20-30 mm in less than an hour, with 60-90 mm in 2-3 hours possible in a few places.
A second weather warning for Monday has also been issued for large areas of the UK, including Liverpool. The thunderstorm warning covers areas of East Midlands, East of England London & South East, North East, North West, South West, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber, Scotland and Wales.
The warning, which has been issued today, will come into place on Monday July 21, at 11am and remain in place until 9pm. the weather agency warns “Heavy showers and thunderstorms may lead to flooding and disruption in a few places on Monday.”
It adds: “Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected during Monday, especially during the afternoon and early evening. While many will miss the worst conditions, a few places could see 30-50 mm of rain within a couple of hours.Heavy downpours of rain will be the primary hazard but lightning strikes are also likely along with the potential for hail.”
Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page said: “Intense rainfall will impact parts of the UK as thunderstorms move in from France. A range of severe weather warnings have been issued, including an amber warning covering southeast England and London.
“The intense rainfall could lead to surface water flooding as well as frequent lightning and hail too. The situation is evolving, and warnings may be changed or added.
“This weekend is expected to be busy on the roads as more schools in England and Wales break up for the summer holidays, so it’s important people keep up-to-date with the very latest forecast.
“There will be spells of more pleasant weather in parts of the UK through the weekend, with some sunny spells in between systems as they move through.”
In the Met Office forecast for Liverpool this evening, it says: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms continuing to spread northwards, easing into the night to leave largely cloudy skies by dawn. Still feeling humid overnight. Minimum temperature 14 °C.”
Tomorrow’s forecast is: “A cloudy but dry start with heavy, thundery showers developing into the afternoon, merging to give longer spells of rain at times. Some brighter interludes possible and turning breezy. Maximum temperature 23 °C.”
