Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has posted to his social media ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday. The midfielder shared a memory of his goal against the Blues on his Instagram story with the Reds set to lock-horns with their neighbours for the final time at Goodison Park.

Arne Slot’s side travel across Stanley Park to take on the Toffees, who will be buoyant on the back of their much-needed 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Wolves in midweek. Liverpool have a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League but there is no respite as they gear up for yet another gruelling encounter.

Henderson, currently plying his trade in Eredivisie with Ajax, departed the Reds last summer as he made the move to Saudi Arabia. The midfielder joined Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq before returning to Europe six months later.

Ahead of Liverpool’s final showdown away in L4, the official Instagram account posted a video of his goal against the Blues. Henderson’s strike outside the box was his first and only goal against their city rivals during a 4-1 win over Rafael Benitez’s side in 2021.

The 34-year-old shared the goal and captioned it: “Derby days,” accompanied by a face with steam emoji.

Despite leaving Liverpool, Henderson’s affinity with the club remains and he visited the AXA Training Centre in October. He reunited with his former teammates and was greeted by the man who replaced him as captain, Virgil van Dijk.

On his return to Merseyside, he told Voetbal Primeur: “So good. I’ve watched them a lot, I think the team have had another lift with the manager and the staff coming in.

“The performances have been outstanding every time I’ve watched them play, they look in full control. I went to Liverpool a few weeks ago and met Arne Slot there and his staff and the team, it was very impressive to be honest.

“You can see the energy is very good there at the minute, the vibe is good, they look very strong in the league. So it’s nice to see.”
