Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to break Jamie Vardy’s Premier League scoring streak record. The Egyptian has netted in seven top-flight matches in a row and needs to score in FIVE more to eclipse the Leicester City striker after he smashed Ruud van Nistelrooy’s previous record back in 2015.

Vardy, 37, scored in 11 successive matches against Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Stoke, Arsenal, Norwich, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Watford, Newcastle and Manchester United during the infamous 2015/16 Leicester title-winning campaign to break his now manager Van Nistelrooy’s return of 10 on the bounce.

But now, Salah is within touching distance of coming close to Vardy’s imperious record with the Liverpool forward scoring for the last seven Premier League games. He started the run with a goal against Chelsea and has followed that him with netting against Arsenal, Brighton, Aston Villa, Southampton, Manchester City and Newcastle.

And Shearer, who is the Premier League record goalscorer, has tipped Salah to pip Vardy’s record. Liverpool have Everton, Fulham, Tottenham, Leicester and West Ham in their next five fixtures.

Shearer told Betfair: “As a player, when you’re on a run like Salah is, you feel pretty unstoppable. I’ve been in that position myself and you just can’t wait for the next game to come along.

“You don’t go out there hoping you’re going to score, you go out knowing that you’re going to score. Standing in that tunnel before a game when you’re in red hot form, it’s a great feeling, believe me.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to see him breaking Jamie Vardy’s Premier League scoring streak record, especially with the form that he’s in, the player he is and the chances that Liverpool create. They’re now coming to a point in the season over Christmas and New Year where there are so many games.

“Can he break the record? I wouldn’t put it past him, he’s that good of a footballer.”
