Bradley Walsh welcomed four fresh contestants onto the ITV quiz show
Bradley Walsh apologised to a contestant on The Chase after he made a mistake when asking a question. Angela, Sean, Rakesh and Debbie made up the team of four players who were eager to test their luck against one of the UK’s best quizzers.
Debbie from Cheshire was first up to take on The Chaser, who in this case was Jenny “The Vixen” Ryan. She gave a great performance in her Cash Builder round, earning £6,000.
Debbie’s luck continued as she faced The Vixen in a tricky head-to-head. But one particular question divided opinions on the show when Bradley Walsh asked: “In the Roman Republic, which temporary magistrate with extraordinary powers was appointed in times of crisis?” The possible answers were “Censor, Praetor or Dictator.” Debbie selected censor but the correct answer was dictator.
The Vixen was quick to give her reasoning for the tricky question, correcting Bradley Walsh’s pronunciation of the word dictator. The ITV quiz host was baffled as he didn’t realise there were multiple ways to pronounce the word, including “dictay-tor” and “dictat-or.”
He was lost for words when Jenny gave her explanation for the different pronunciations. Noticing Bradley’s disagreement on the topic, The Chaser joked: “Take it up with my Latin teacher.”
Brad acknowledged the correction and realised if he had pronounced the word differently, perhaps Debbie would have been able to choose the correct answer.
He said: “So I should have said censor, praetor and ‘dictat-or.” He added: “So I’ve said the question wrong basically, and thrown you a complete and utter wobbler.”
Debbie chimed in: “That’s your fault I got it wrong then.” Brad replied: “It is- I’m so sorry.” He soon returned to his presenting duties. Luckily, Debbie managed to secure her spot in the final chase and kickstarted the shared cash prize pot.
Next up was Rakesh who hoped to follow in Debbie’s successful footsteps. The quizzer bagged £3,000 in the quick-fire question round and earned his spot alongside Debbie in the final chase.
Sean from Liverpool tested his general knowledge skills and earned just £1,000 in a tricky Cash Builder. He went on to face The Vixen but his time on the quiz show was cut short.
The Scouse contestant was unfortunately eliminated from the game when he failed to outrun The Chaser. Sean said his goodbyes and left the show empty-handed.
Angela from Hampshire was the last contestant who hoped to join her teammates in the final. She accumulated £6,000 in the Cash Builder round before she was also eliminated from the show, leaving Debbie and Rakesh to take part in the final chase.
The contestants tested their luck against The Vixen one last time as they played for £9,000. However, their score of 14 wasn’t strong enough to triumph on the quiz show and The Chaser caught the team with 28 seconds remaining.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV1
