Viewers “already love” Bradley Riches
Emmerdale fans were pleased to see one newcomer make a good impression as they arrived in the fictional Yorkshire village. Bradley Riches made his soap debut as he appeared as Ross Barton’s (Mike Parr) long-lost younger brother, Lewis.
In recent episodes, Moira received a letter addressed to the family of Emma Barton. It turned out to be sent from Lewis Barton, who was asking to find out more information about his mum.
During Thursday’s broadcast of the ITV soap, Ross was keen to get in touch with Lewis. After a few worries and concerns about who Lewis might be, Ross decided to take the chance and arrange to meet him for the first time.
When Lewis suggested they meet up in the woods, Ross felt a bit uneasy but Moira reassured him and he went ahead with the arrangements.
It immediately became clear that their personalities were far from similar. Ross’ blunt humour compared with Lewis’ energetic nature proved to be a hit with fans.
Taking to social media, one fan said: “I like the new Barton Brother Lewis he’s going to bring cheekiness into the Dales him and Ross are going to be so sweet !!” A second added: “I like Lewis already and I think Ross does too.”
Ross and Lewis talked about their interests as well as their family history. Emmerdale viewers were glad to see the Heartstopper actor make his long-awaited debut, as it was announced he would be joining the soap two months ago.
One fan said: “I love Lewis Barton already!! I loved Brad in Heartstopper and he is incredible here too already! Fabulous casting.” More added to the conversation on X: “Oh Lewis is just charming. We already love Bradley Riches as Lewis!”
A third said: “Lewis is giving icon already I fear.” A fourth added: “I like him – glad that #Emmerdale have finally cast their first autistic character.”
Bradley Riches is renowned for his role as James McEwan in the hit Netflix show, Heartstopper. The 23-year-old also appeared on last year’s season of Celebrity Big Brother and finished in sixth place.
Bradley was diagnosed with autism at nine-years-old and is passionate about being an advocate for his community. The actor released his first book in 2023, titled A Different Kind of Superpower, which is based on his own autism diagnosis.
Bradley has also previously spoke out for more LGBTQ+ visibility in schools as part of a campaign with Just Like Us, a young people’s charity.
Speaking about joining the cast of Emmerdale, Bradley said: “I’m beyond excited to be joining Emmerdale! It’s a real bucket list moment for me, especially since it was my grandad’s favourite soap, I just know he’d be over the moon.
“Everyone has been so lovely and welcoming, and the village is even more amazing in real life. I absolutely love my character (though I can’t spill too much just yet!), and I’m just so grateful for this opportunity. I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store…”
