Ríoghnach (pronounced ree-uh-nah or ree-uh-knock) translates to ‘queenly’ in Irish, stemming from the word for ‘queen’. According to the most recent data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ríoghnach made its appearance on the Irish baby name charts in 2023.

With fewer than three girls named Ríoghnach last year, it holds the 625th spot, making it truly a rare gem. The name has yet to crack the top 100.

Rooted in Irish mythology, Ríonach (an alternative spelling) is often linked with the wife of one of Ireland’s earliest High Kings. For those who appreciate the significance behind names, Ríoghnach offers a connection to Ireland’s Royal past.

Interestingly, Ríonach, the more traditional spelling, was also given to fewer than three baby girls in 2023. The name Ríona, a simpler variant, secured the 142nd spot on the list, with 33 newborn Ríonas, suggesting that while Ríoghnach itself remains relatively rare.

Although it may not be as common as other Irish names, Ríoghnach has been borne by several notable individuals. Among them are Ríoghnach Ní Ghrioghair, a film director, and Ríoghnach Connolly, a renowned traditional sean nós singer.
