Shoppers looking for a cheaper alternative this Easter should read on

For chocolate lovers, this is a great time of year. With Easter weekend officially here, you can finally tuck into chocolate eggs and bunnies guilt-free.

However, there is some bad news for Easter egg shoppers and you might have noticed your chocolate treats have become smaller and more expensive compared to previous years. With high prices as well as shrinkflation meaning many shoppers are getting less for their money, those looking for a cheaper Easter shop may be considering budget-friendly alternatives to big chocolate brands.

With this in mind, I put two Easter bunnies from Aldi and Lidl to the test against more expensive brand, Lindt, to see if they measured up.

Aldi – £2.99/150g

Neither Aldi nor Lidl quite matched the visual appeal of the Lindt bunny and I have to admit that the childish joy of picking up the neat gold wrapper, complete with its red ribbon and little bell, made the price tag (£3.50/100g in Asda) seem worth it.

After all, Easter treats are as much about excitement as they are about taste.

That said, Aldi’s bunny was very impressive. It was bigger than the one I found in Lidl, and while it was more expensive, it was about the same value per gram.

I’ve always found Aldi’s Moser Roth chocolate to be an excellent supermarket option and this was no exception. It had thicker chocolate and a richer, slightly darker taste than Lidl’s bunny.

It wasn’t as creamy as Lindt though, and if I had to choose based on taste alone, I’d go for the brand.

Never the less this was quickly polished off and was better value too.

Lidl – 99p/50g

Lidl’s bunny was visually closer to Lindt’s in terms of shape, with a smoother finish, unlike Aldi’s patterned design.

It was the smallest of the three and had the thinnest chocolate, which was also sweeter and less rich that the other two.

While it wasn’t a match for Lindt’s creamy, indulgent milk chocolate, it was still enjoyable especially considering its price.

I personally preferred Aldi’s version, but Lidl’s would be a good option for kids due to its sweeter chocolate and smaller size.

At 99p it’s definitely a good option for those who are less concerned with premium quality but want a fun and tasty Easter treat.
