Plastic Christmas trees might be all the rage these days, but for people who appreciate the smell of fresh pine needles, shopping for a real tree is an unmissable part of the festive season. Picking up a grand tree each December and hauling it through the front door of your home is an old-fashioned tradition – but getting it there could land you in trouble if you’re not careful.

Transporting Christmas trees requires preparation and a nod to the Highway Code to ensure safety on the roads, as neglecting the rules could turn a merry outing into a costly mistake. From fines to insurance claim issues, transporting a tree can bring unexpected risks.

Charlotte Adams, from car insurance company ALA Insurance, said: “Transporting a Christmas tree might seem straightforward, but it’s important to consider how your insurance policy applies. If an improperly secured tree causes an accident or damages another vehicle, you could be held liable and insurers may deny claims if negligence is involved. Additionally, transporting a tree inside your car could lead to interior damage, which many policies won’t cover as wear and tear.”

The company has provided essential advice for motorists to stay safe, legal, and protected on the roads while spreading holiday cheer. Here are three big considerations for transporting a Christmas tree:

Secure Loading is Key

A loose or poorly secured tree isn’t just a safety risk—it’s illegal. Under Highway Code Rule 98, all loads must be securely fastened to prevent hazards for other road users. A loose or poorly secured Christmas tree can lead to fines, points on your licence, or even more serious repercussions if it causes an accident. Drivers must ensure their load is stable, with overhangs marked clearly (a red flag for more than one metre, reflectors for over two metres).

View Obstructions

Drivers must ensure their tree doesn’t obstruct their view. As highlighted by Highway Code Rule 229, any load blocking the windscreen or mirrors is illegal and could result in penalties.”

Drive Smart

Christmas trees affect aerodynamics. Experts advise driving at lower speeds and checking regularly for movement to keep both tree and car intact.

Secure the tree properly with strong straps, and if it overhangs the car, ensure you’ve attached the required red flags or reflectors. Drive carefully, avoiding sharp turns or sudden stops, and double-check that the tree doesn’t block your view. Taking these precautions helps keep everyone safe on the road while keeping the holiday spirit intact.
