He is wanted in the UK and Spain for alleged organised crime, drug trafficking and money laundering, as well as a murder
An alleged high-ranking crime boss of an international gang will be extradited from Bali to Spain today, Wednesday, April 1, Indonesian authorities have said. Steven Lyons, 45, was arrested after he landed on the Indonesian island on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Police Scotland confirmed it is working alongside European authorities in relation to the arrest. It is understood Lyons travelled from Singapore before he was arrested by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport. Untung Widiyatmoko, head of Interpol Indonesia, later confirmed his arrest on Tuesday to PA.
It is reported that Lyons was taken into custody after the country’s immigration system flagged an Interpol red notice against him, an alert issued worldwide for people wanted for extradition. Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions, still believed to be on the island.
Bugie Kurniawan, of Bali’s immigration office, said Spanish Interpol has identified the two as part of the same criminal gang, but added there were no outstanding arrest warrants for either.
Lyons is wanted in the UK and Spain for alleged organised crime, drug trafficking and money laundering, as well as a murder that took place in Spain in 2024.
According to Mr Widiyatmoko, he will be extradited to Spain on Wednesday. Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya says his arrest followed an investigation from Scottish and Spanish police forces.
Lyons’ criminal enterprise allegedly uses shell companies for the purpose of laundering money in the UK, Spain, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey. Mr Lyons allegedly survived a shooting in 2006 that killed his cousin.
In May last year, his brother, Eddie Lyons Jr, and friend Ross Monaghan were killed by a gunman outside Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol.
A 44-year-old man was later arrested by Merseyside Police on behalf of Spanish authorities for the two murders.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the arrest of a Scottish nominal in Bali and we are working closely with European partners.” PA asked Interpol for a comment.
