Dan Ambros played on the hill surrounded by people from the city
A Scouser told how he sneaked his DJ decks into Glastonbury to deliver “the highlight of the week”. Dan Ambros, from Maghull, sat “squashed in the back” of a car with his girlfriend, Kourtney Kirk, for hours as they travelled from the city to Worthy Farm for the five-day festival.
The 27-year-old made several trips in and out of the site, each time bringing in more equipment hidden under blankets and bags of sweets. With everything he needed eventually in, Dan said he wanted to start the party early on Wednesday, July 25, but admitted it was the most nervous he has been to do a set.
The DJ, who now lives in Walton, told the ECHO: “It was the plan to do the set from the minute I bought the ticket and I knew exactly where I was going to do it. I knew there were loads of Scousers on the hill. There wasn’t much to do on the Wednesday so everyone was just sitting around having a few drinks. I thought I’d try and make it better.
“Everyone was buzzing. They immediately got their phones out to film. I didn’t tell anyone around us what I was planning on doing, I didn’t want any fuss, so I just kept the decks hidden until I wanted to do it. I was really nervous to be honest, the most nervous I’ve ever been before a set.”
However, Dan said the “highlight” almost didn’t happen as at one point he misplaced his ticket and wristband – both of which are needed each time for access to the site.
He said: “As I went out to get my DJ equipment from the car, I lost my ticket and my band to scan me in. So when I put my hand in my pocket to get back into Glastonbury, I realised that I didn’t have either and must’ve lost them outside the gate.
“I ran back to where I was and there was some lad standing there with my ticket in his hand. He went to me ‘You looking for this?’. Luckily, I got my ticket back. I was already paranoid, they are so strict so I have no idea how I got through again.”
The musician spent the festival with girlfriend Kourtney, 25, and best friend Mikey Hutson, 27. The four-hour journey left them squashed and frustrated as DJ equipment took over the car.
Dan said: “Everyone in the car was fuming with me. They couldn’t fit all their stuff in the car because of my equipment but I was so determined to bring it all.
“It was a nightmare getting all my equipment in. I used a trolley to get it from one side of Glastonbury to the other. But it was definitely worth the sore back and legs. I’m planning to do it again next Glastonbury, I’ll find a way to sneak my equipment in.
“My set was about an hour and a half long. I wanted to fit in with the Glastonbury style so it was a lot of classic house music. People have been commenting on videos of the set saying ‘this was fully one of our highlights of the week’.”
Despite Dan being the highlight of so many people’s weekend, his personal highlight was watching Fat Boy Slim.
He said: I’ve been a fan of his since I started listening to music to be honest, I’ve always loved him. I’ve always wanted to be a DJ, ever since I started listening to music and going to festivals.
“It’s always been what I’ve wanted to do and now I do events all around Liverpool and in O’Beach in Ibiza. I’m doing Sin Sundays with them in September. I want to start doing more spontaneous mini raves around the city”.
Dan said despite his back “killing” after carrying all the equipment up the festival’s infamous hill, he said he hopes to do it again in 2027 after the festival returns from its fallow year.
