Man City lost 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield to be left 11 points behind the Reds in the Premier League title race

Manchester City are reeling after being left 11 points behind Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League table following a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo saw Pep Guardiola’s men on the end of their sixth loss in seven games.

Now down in the unfamiliar position of fifth in the table, it’s no surprise that City haven’t taken the reverse well. City boss Guardiola gave a slightly bizarre response to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, admitting he didn’t expect Anfield to engage in such light teasing after initially appearing to take it well, holding up six fingers to fans to signify the amount of titles he’s won with City.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Stefan Ortega aimed a dig at the city of Liverpool itself post-match. When asked in a radio interview after the game about the chant directed at Guardiola, Ortega said: “Someone told me before that this area (Liverpool) is probably not the best part in the UK. I think he reacted really well, yeah.”

And it appears that Ortega wasn’t alone with his anger, as defender Ruben Dias, who was robbed of the ball by Darwin Nunez in the build-up to the second goal, gave a bizarre interview to former footballer Jan Aage Fjortoft post-match.

Asked how the City squad would respond internally to the run of defeats, he snapped: “You know that you’re talking to one of the players of one of the teams in the world that has won the most in recent years?

“So maybe have a think about that and be sure that we know how to deal with it.”

And when pressed by Fjortoft about the mindset of City’s players, he added: “Easy, next game. One game at a time. Nothing else.

“These are the ones everyone wants to play. These are the ones we will always remember.

“These difficult circumstances, for the stadium itself and also for the moment we’re going through, this is when you see the warriors you have next to you.”
