The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to anyone in receipt of Universal Credit benefits or the state pension.

The government department has taken to social media to alert people of a scam text message that are being sent to scam text messages that are being sent out in an attempt to dupe millions of claimants into handing over personal and financial information.

Posting on X, the DWP issued a message stating: “Be aware of scam text messages claiming to be from the DWP.” The post continued: “Always be careful about links and never share personal or financial details. Only engage with official sources.”

Anyone receiving suspicious messages purporting to be from the DWP is encouraged to contact Action Fraud in order to report them. Such reports can also be made through the official government website at gov.uk.

On its website, the government states: “Report misleading websites, emails, phone numbers, phone calls or text messages you think may be suspicious.

Do not give out private information (such as bank details or passwords), reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they’re genuine.”

Anyone receiving suspicious text messages can forward them on to 7726 for free, which will report the message to a person’s mobile phone provider.
