The Fool has been open for less than a year
People are “gutted” after the closure of a multi-purpose arts venue. The Fool has been welcoming music and theatre lovers to West Street in Southport since it opened in November 2024, offering a mix of gigs, plays and food.
It was founded by Clare Scott and run by Ginificent, a theatre production company based in the town. The venue promised to deliver a fresh approach, combining intimate performances with opportunities for visitors to engage with the arts hands-on. In the last few months, it has hosted a production of Mamma Mia, a comedy night, local bands and The Pistols, a tribute act to famous punk band The Sex Pistols.
However, The Fool announced yesterday that the “gamble” of opening an arts venue hadn’t paid off, although it hinted that the venue could return sometime in the future.
In a statement on its social media pages, The Fool said: “A farewell from The Fool. The curtain falls, but what a show it’s been. We took our leap, hearts wide, and for however brief, we sparkled. A stage for dreams, a home for voices daring and bright.
“But even the grandest stories have their final acts, and ours must close – too soon, yet not without a symphony of gratitude.
“To those who stepped through our doors: thank you. To the artists who lit up our nights, turning wood and wire into magic: thank you. You reminded us why we leapt at all.
“This is not an ending, only an unplanned intermission. The arts will always be a gamble, and though the house did not win, we leave richer for having played.
“For now, The Fool cannot keep its doors open – but it will linger in pop-ups, in whispers of what was and flashes of what might still be.
“Keep dreaming. Keep playing. The journey does not end here. (To our ticket holders: watch for word soon. We’re working to relocate what we can, and refund what we cannot. The show, one way or another, must go on.)”
Many customers were dismayed to hear about the news. Ben Oliver said: “Best sound stage in Southport bar none, such a shame guys.
“Thanks for the shot you took, thanks for art you brought, and thanks for the sparks you lit.”
Frankie Grange said: “Loved the times we visited your venue, everyone was so friendly and the sound was always perfect.
“Hope you find somewhere else to carry on your brilliant venture.”
Gary Holmes added: “Feeling shocked and very sad. Southport needed a venue like this putting on some quality artists.
“Thank you for giving it a go and for giving me some hope. Thank you so much.”
Rob Bridge commented: “Absolutely gutted, was such a great idea and an enjoyable night out. Good luck to you all in whatever you do next.
Robert Doyle said: “Such a sad post to read. Gutted. Such a great venue.”
