Coronation Street has confirmed dramatic new scenes for Mal Roper and Bernie Winter
Coronation Street has revealed a significant update on new antagonist Mal Roper in the popular ITV soap.
Fans of the soap will remember that Mal, portrayed by Tim Treloar, first appeared earlier this year when he encountered Bernie Winter at the Chariot Square Hotel.
Mal had come to the cobbles to confront Roy Cropper, suspecting him of having an affair with his wife Alice – a claim which Roy refuted, explaining they were pen pals and she had never mentioned being married.
Retreating to the Chariot Square Hotel to drown his sorrows, Mal bumped into a tipsy Bernie, who was also seeking solace in alcohol following the death of her son-in-law Billy Mayhew earlier this year. Bernie was heartbroken over losing her son-in-law so soon after the death of her son Paul Foreman, who passed away in 2024.
The pair spent the evening together drinking and taking drugs in Mal’s room, where he attempted to make a move but was rebuffed by Bernie. Since then, Mal has developed an obsession with Bernie, seeking employment in Weatherfield and at Roy’s Rolls café to stay near her, reports the Daily Star.
As the situation escalated, Bernie’s son, police detective Kit Green, assaulted him in an attempt to protect his mother. In forthcoming scenes, Mal, who has recently regained consciousness in hospital, intensifies his focus on the family.
In next week’s episodes, Bernie and her husband Dev Alahan return from holiday only to be disheartened when Mal shows up and jovially declares his intention to remain in the area for the foreseeable future.
Later in the week, matters deteriorate further when Mal visits the station and informs DS Lisa Swain that he’s experienced a memory flashback and knows who attacked him.
Kit then receives a message from Lisa summoning him to the station and informing him that Mal has remembered who attacked him, leaving Kit and Bernie panicked.
It’s soon revealed that Mal has targeted Bernie’s husband, Dev, by lying that he’s responsible. Dev is interviewed for the attack on Mal, whilst a worried Bernie confides in daughter Gemma Winter that it was Kit who attacked Mal and it would seem that the only way she can save her husband is if she shops her own son.
Later, Kit explains to Bernie that there’s no evidence against Dev so nothing for either of them to worry about. However, in a disturbing twist, Bernie is horrified by a shocking proposition from Mal.
At the end of the week, Ryan Connor observes Bernie with concern as she heads down a corridor at the Chariot Square Hotel, knocks on a bedroom door and disappears.
Asserting that just being in the same room as her means everything to him, Mal pats the bed for Bernie to sit next to him. As Bernie attempts to conceal her revulsion, will she go through with Mal’s proposal or will she be saved in time?
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
