She said the pair, alongside her husband, were ‘good friends’
A gold disc linked to Rod Stewart became one of the standout items on Antiques Roadshow, after a guest revealed the surprising story behind how it ended up in her family. The memorable moment featured in an episode filmed at Thirlestane Castle, broadcast on BBC One, where presenter Fiona Bruce introduced a host of unusual treasures brought in by members of the public.
Among them was a gold record examined by expert Raj Bisram, which had once belonged to Scottish footballer Sandy Jardine. The guest explained the unusual connection between her late husband and the singer.
She said: “Well, Sandy Jardine’s my husband, he died ten years ago. Many years ago, he and Kenny Dalglish were very close friends with Rod Stewart.
“And they were out having a carry-on, as we do in Scotland and Rod Stewart said, ‘You know, I would love to have a Scot, you know a Scottish cap, Sandy’. And he goes ‘Well, I would like to have a gold disc’. Well, it actually came to, for there we are.”
The light-hearted exchange led to a swap between the pair, with Rod receiving a traditional Scottish cap while Jardine was later gifted the gold disc. After inspecting the item, Bisram estimated it could be worth between £1,500 and £2,000, much to the owner’s delight.
The episode, filmed at the historic Borders castle, also featured several other intriguing finds. Antiques specialist Marc Allum met a mother and son who brought along a group of objects inherited from a distant Russian relative.
Their collection included a portrait, a small painting and a gold, enamelled snuffbox said to have been gifted by a Russian tsar.
The owner admitted she had never been too concerned about the value of the delicate item, focusing instead on the story attached to it. But Allum revealed the tiny piece could be worth between £20,000 and £30,000.
Reacting to the surprising estimate, she exclaimed: “That’s quite a lot for a little box, isn’t it?!”
Allum responded by pointing out that its history was what made it so valuable, adding: “But it’s a little box with great history attached to it. So thank you, it’s been lovely to talk about it.”
While the small snuffbox carried a hefty valuation, it was the unexpected Rod Stewart swap story that provided one of the episode’s most entertaining moments.
