The long-serving Liverpool defender has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer.
Long-serving Liverpool left-back, Andy Robertson, has emerged as a leading transfer target for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid – and some supporters in the ECHO comments section have cautioned the club against letting Robertson end his eight-year stay at Anfield in this summer transfer window.
The Scotland international is into the final year of his contract, having been a permanent fixture in their team since moving from Hull City for a bargain fee back in 2017. During his time, Liverpool have won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a pair of League Cup trophies, and the 2018/2019 Champions League.
Atletico are after some defensive reinforcements, and have done well with Premier League veterans in recent years, with Kieran Trippier and Tottenham’s Matt Doherty both making the move to Spain. Meanwhile, Liverpool are expecting to complete the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, so Robertson might not be guaranteed first-choice left-back if he stayed next season.

Some would be quite pleased to see one more year of Robertson at Anfield. Reader Dunfy6 says: “Personally I’d be looking to keep Robbo to compete with and bring out the best of Kerkez. Robbo’s years under [Jurgen] Klopp were some of the best and most consistent performances we’d seen from a full-back in the Premier League.
“Granted, his legs have gone a bit since then, but he’s still one of the best there in the country. I feel the club will do what’s in Robbo’s interest and if he wants to move then I don’t think they’ll stand in his way.”
Nisco agrees: “Robertson shouldn’t be sold to anywhere. He’s too experienced and key to the development of any new signing.”
Commenter Smudgeridoo writes: “I’d be very cautious about selling Robbo. He’d be a better No.2 to Kerkez than Tsimikas, and more specifically he’s a phenomenal vice captain! What he brings to the training ground, and day-to-day player bonding, is priceless. He’s LFC through and through! I know there are other characters in the squad, but very few with Andy’s personality and leadership skill.”
Kevlasvegas says: “With Robbo and his age, we could sell him this summer with likely bids around £10m. But, he has been an excellent servant for the club and would be an excellent back-up should we sign Kerkez. Andy just can’t play every game anymore, but he’s reliable for cover. If we are going to and have to sell, then unfortunately Kostas tops the list.”
Kejo3201 writes: “I’d rather keep both left-backs and add Kerkez. Need the legs for all four competitions. If Robbo decides to leave, then I would wish him well. He’s been great these past eight years.”
Mon56 says: “We should keep Robertson for another season. The main bulk of the work Kerkez can handle, and Robertson can play sporadically – at the same time he can get his fitness etc. After that – even if he goes on free – we’ve had the best of him.”
One person reckons that the combination of Kerkez and current second-choice Kostas Tsimikas will be more than good enough. Neil1169 says: “£10m plus for Andy and it’s thank you and a ‘leave with our blessing’. It’s a big wage off the budget that allows us to invest elsewhere. Kerkez is excellent offensively and defensively and will only get better. Tsimikas is a great number two and is happy with the role, give him another year.
“I’ve a feeling we’ll be playing with wing-backs next season and AR can’t manage that workload anymore.”
