Paul McCartney, who is set to play London tonight (December 18), shared the one ‘luxury’ he had, with The Beatles member saying he and John Lennon would ‘write hits’ for the ‘things we needed’ at the time
Legendary musician Paul McCartney revealed the one “luxury” he had to have while writing The Beatles’ hits. Sir Paul, 83, spent a decade writing songs with John Lennon as part of the Fab Four and later fronted Wings. He is now touring the UK and will play two shows in London tonight and tomorrow (December 18 and 19). In an unearthed interview with the BBC, the Golden Slumbers and Hey Jude songwriter named an item he had always wanted.
The interview, conducted just three years after the death of writing partner Lennon, had a candid McCartney share his thoughts on his music and why he wrote so many hits during his tenure with The Beatles, which also featured bandmates George Harrison and Ringo Starr. In an interview with Sue Lawley, McCartney believed he would be “lucky if I get to be old” and revealed why he had written so many songs.

He said: “I could’ve just dried up because there’s no incentive, because that was the early incentive if you’re honest about it. For most people it is just to be successful, to earn money. We used to talk about writing a swimming pool. It was one of those between John and I. You know, you need a pool here. We’d better go and write it, ching ching ching, and we’d try and write hits for the things we needed or whatever.”
While McCartney said he would “still do” songwriting even if he “didn’t get paid for it,” he did share it had afforded him a few luxuries in life. Lawley joked with McCartney that he had not fallen for “chunky jewellery” or the other expenses his wealth might afford, but The Beatles bassist then shared the luxury item he afforded himself.
Lawley asked: “You haven’t got a swimming pool?” McCartney replied: “I have actually, Sue. Yes, I succumbed to the temptation, but I’ve got kids now, see. So that’s different. I never did get one until I got children.” McCartney went on to explain he “protects” his children from his wealth.
Fans loved McCartney’s responses in the interview and have since praised the singer for his candid replies to Lawley. One user wrote: “He’s so iron clad with his emotions but sometime every now and then he’ll just drop the most gut punching response of all time.” Another added: “We’re lucky he got to be old.”
A third user suggested McCartney’s current tour is a continuation of his beliefs expressed in the interview. They wrote: “‘If I didn’t get paid, I think I’d still do it’ – definitely true. Clearly doesn’t need the money but is still touring in his 80s.”
