The latest Liverpool news as Jamie Carragher addresses Andy Robertson’s future, current form and his nightmare day against Fulham.
Jamie Carragher admits that Liverpool might need to buy a new left-back this January after Andy Robertson’s struggle for form continued on Saturday. The 30-year-old was sent off after just 15 minutes against Fulham in a game that ended 2-2.
Robertson had been on the receiving end of a high early challenge from Issa Diop – “It’s one of those decisions where it’s probably an orange [card, between a red and yellow],” Carragher said – before then being caught out stood at the back post for Fulham’s opener. His afternoon was made worse shortly after when he was dismissed.
Harry Wilson, who was judged to have been lucky to be on pitch after his own tackle on Ryan Gravenberch, raced on to Robertson’s poor touch and was brought down. Referee Tony Harrington gave a red card and VAR confirmed the decision following a routine check.

For Carragher, Robertson’s poor start to the match might have been down to the early collision with Diop. “He’s having a tough time and, as a full-back, it’s a very unforgiving position because you can get exposed,” he said on Sky Sports show Monday Night Football. “I think this [getting a knock] has an impact on him.”
Carragher continued: “He gets a yellow card and some people are asking for a red. I just think when he’s running back here, he doesn’t look like he’s running back fully.
“I think it [the goal] actually plays a part in what happens between that tackle and getting sent off. Now you see this situation here, as well, a little bit gingerly going for the ball.
“Then he gets the red card. Listen, it’s just been a nightmare day for him.
“Right now, he needs help and when he gets that first whack, maybe he should come off, but they haven’t got any back-up for him at the moment. He’s going through a tough time, but it’s something that Liverpool need to address in January.
Full-back Kostas Tsimikas missed the Fulham draw through injury, with Joe Gomez deputising on the left once Robertson went off. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, and indeed Fulham full-back Antonnee Robinson, have been identified as potential transfer replacements.
