Gavin and Stacey fans are eager to find out how the last episode will end
James Corden asked if Smithy said Yes to Nessa on Gavin and Stacey
Gavin and Stacey fans are buzzing with anticipation as the countdown to the final episode of the beloved sitcom continues, set to air on Christmas Day.
The burning question remains: will the mystery of the notorious family fishing trip ever be revealed, or is it destined to remain one of those unsolved enigmas? The cast members are keeping their lips sealed, so at this point, we can’t divulge whether fans will get the closure they crave.
However, what’s certain from recent chats with the full lineup is that BBC audiences are in for a treat, with promises of a “satisfied” feeling as numerous “twists and turns” come to light in the concluding episode.
Steffan Rhodri, who portrays Dave Coaches, was taken aback by the revelations in the 2024 script. He shared his excitement: “I had no idea what to expect when I received the script, so the twists and turns were surprising and very satisfying,” reports Wales Online.
“I messaged James (Corden) immediately after reading it and said something like, I thought it was like one of Shakespeare’s great comedies with the surprising plot twists combined with the wonderful symmetry of the romance. A slightly grandiose assessment, but fair I think.”

James Corden, co-creator and star, dished on the feelings that came with reuniting the entire cast for what lies ahead.
He shared: “It felt incredible. I mean for a long time when Ruth (Jones) and I were writing the show we actually didn’t know if it would ever come to fruition because really what we’ve always done is just write it for ourselves and then figure out if we think it might be good enough for an audience.
“It just felt so good to be back in a room with Ruth and then thinking we may have happened on a story which might be satisfying.”
The last time audiences saw the beloved series’ characters was during a nail-biting cliffhanger five years ago, with Nessa Jenkins – portrayed by Ruth Jones – proposing to Smithy, depicted by Corden. The burning question remains unanswered: Did Nessa and Smithy go down the aisle?
The mystery of whether Smithy even accepted her proposal has been left hanging. As anticipation builds for the Christmas special, fans are still in the dark about their romantic fate.
What’s in store for viewers in the final instalment? In Barry, fans will catch up with Bryn, who’s all set for a trip to Essex, while Stacey and Gavin search for ways to add some zing to their seventeen-year-long marriage, and Gwen behaves unexpectedly.
Meanwhile, Nessa embarks on a new business venture, and Neil, the baby, starts an apprenticeship with his dad, Smithy. Over in Billericay, Gavin’s parents, Pam and Mick, are flustered about playing hosts, with newly retired Mick practicing golf swings in the living room.
Their pals, Dawn and Pete, encounter further relationship troubles.
Gavin & Stacey will return to BBC screens on Christmas Day from 9pm.
