Fans of The Beatles are remembering ‘exactly where they were’ on the day of a tragic moment in the Fab Four’s history, with some recalling how they followed the story at the time
The Beatles fans are sharing “exactly where they were” at the time of a tragic moment in the band’s history. With the world’s most famous band going their separate ways in 1969, each member went on to form successful individual projects through the 1970s.
Paul McCartney spearheaded the group Wings while George Harrison would link up with Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra to form supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. Fellow Fab Four members Ringo Starr and John Lennon went solo, but the latter’s life came to a tragic end after he was assassinated on December 8, 1980.

Lennon died at the age of 40 after he was shot in the entrance of his New York City home. Killer Mark David Chapman is still behind bars, with a fourteenth parole hearing planned for August 2025. He has been denied parole 13 times since 2000.
Fans of the band remember where they were on the day Lennon, who had been working on what would be his final album Double Fantasy, was killed. Many fans found out the news the same way and revealed the “terrible loss” was delivered to them not through a breaking news piece but through football commentary.
One user took to Reddit and revealed: “For those old enough, most all of us will remember exactly where we were when we heard the news. I for one remember watching Monday Night Football. His death was a terrible loss.”
Another says they heard the news on the radio a day after the assassination, writing: “I had just turned 17, and I actually heard about it on the radio the next morning when I was getting ready for school. I freaked out, my mom let me stay home that day, and I cried for three days straight. I stayed in my room sobbing and playing Beatles records.”
Meanwhile, another chimed in: “I was in my bedroom that I shared with my younger brother. He’s the one who told me that John had been shot, but that’s all we knew at 11 pm I was 16 at the time & we were listening to WNEW in NYC.
“I first thought, ‘Wow this is horrible, I hope it’s not serious.’ Then came the announcement ‘John Lennon has died.’ I didn’t cry. I was just in shock & incredulous.” Another user added: “I was 11. On December 7th, I had no idea who John Lennon was. But I cried with everyone the next day. It breaks my heart every time I think of that day.”
