Local residents in one part of Merseyside have complained of a ‘disgusting’ smell
Residents in one part of Merseyside have complained of a ‘disgusting’ stink which is ‘turning their stomachs’. The smell has been described as a cross between ‘garlic and gas’ and has forced some people to close their windows.
There is much speculation about the cause of the odour but there is no concrete information about where it originates. The areas reportedly affected are Seaforth and Bootle with many residents expressing their exasperation about the strength, frequency and potential health impacts of the smell. Furthermore, there are also reports of commuters holding their breath and keeping their car windows closed as they travel through the area on the way to and from Liverpool city centre.
The issue of the smell was raised on a local Facebook group managed by Bootle resident Michael Brennan who posted his concerns about pollution in the area, he wrote: “With reference to the pungent nauseating smell today, and any future ones for that matter, it may be an idea to email any concerns and complaints to the Environment Agency”.

Responding to a query from the ECHO to try and describe the smell, Mr Brennan added: “The smell is like strong gas and garlic mixed. It really turns your stomach when it hits you.”
Mr Brennan’s post prompted a number of people to comment their experiences of the smell, one person wrote: “It’s disgusting. I notice it really bad – especially on a Sunday weirdly.” Another local resident, Scott added: “I thought it smelt like gas, we shut the windows.”
The ECHO contacted the Environment Agency raising some of the concerns of local residents about the ‘smell’ permeating around the Seaforth and Bootle areas. The ECHO understands they have received no formal report from any resident in regards to the ‘smell’ but officers will now be looking into the matter further.
If anyone has a concern relating to a environmental issue, they are encouraged to report the incidents to the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
