Two floors of the building were filled with smoke
People were evacuated following a fire in a block of flats. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were alerted about an incident on Canning Street in Birkenhead, close to Hamilton Square station, at 4.17pm on Sunday, December 8.
Firefighters arrived five minutes later to find a five-storey block of flats called Birchen House, with a property on the third floor involved in the fire. At the height of the incident there were six fire engines on scene.
Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus began fighting the fire using a main jet hose. Just before 5pm the fire was extinguished but the third and fourth floors were still filled with smoke.

Four firefighters then evacuated properties on the third floor. At 5.28pm, two fire engines left and four remained at the scene. Two residents were checked over by North West Ambulance Service. Both floors have now been ventilated and there is no sign of the fire spreading. As of this evening, two fire engines are at Birchen House and the crews are making up equipment.
