Pep Guardiola decided to gesture at both the Liverpool and Manchester City fans after his side suffered a damning 2-0 defeat at Liverpool
Jamie Carragher believes that Pep Guardiola could be sending a message to the Manchester City board and supporters by gesturing to supporters during their 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.
City were beaten by the Reds courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. And during the second half, fans inside Anfield were heard singing “sacked in the morning” to Guardiola, who has now lost his last four Premier League matches – the first time that has happened since he joined City in 2016.
Defeat on Merseyside means that City sit 11 points behind leaders Liverpool and in danger of completely drifting out of the title race, having won the last FOUR in a row. It’s been a difficult time for City and Guardiola showed his true colours with his reaction to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”.

Guardiola decided to gesture at supporters, highlighting how many Premier League titles he has won during his eight-and-a-half years in charge at the Etihad Stadium by holding up five fingers and thumb. He also decided to do the same gesture pointing to the City fans as he went over to them after the full-time whistle.
Giving his verdict on why Guardiola did that, Carragher told Sky Sports: “Rightly so, I think he mentioned in an interview a few days ago, sometimes you need to lose so people realise what you have done. I think it is just hitting home exactly. Don’t take for granted what we have done, maybe he’s sending a message to the hierarchy above him and his own supporters there but this season City will not be winning the Premier League.”
Meanwhile, Guardiola delivered his say on his side’s performance and the result. “The first 15-20 minutes they were unstoppable, they started so strong, we tried to play with a lot of control and passes, but it was difficult to take it,” the Spaniard told Sky Sports.
“They deserved the first goal, but we started the first half so well and played well in the second half without too much threat. I know how strong Liverpool are in both boxes.
“I congratulate them and we’ll reset and start from zero and it is difficult to believe it. I rely a lot on these players, I know they are doing in this position. We’ll see what happens by the end of the season.”
