Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher hopes Mohamed Salah will sign a new contract with the club, but has no problem with no deal being offered just yet
Jamie Carragher has said he thinks it is ‘obvious’ that Mohammed Salah and Liverpool have different ideas over what the forward is ‘worth’ – but the former defender has no problem with the fact a new deal is yet to be agreed.
Salah opened up about his future at Liverpool on Sunday following his match-winning brace at Southampton – with the goals becoming the 32-year-old’s 21st and 22nd goal contributions of a season. “Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah conceded following the game.
“You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see. Of course [no offer is disappointing], yeah.”

Now, Liverpool legend Carragher has made clear his desire to see the club and player come to an agreement before they reach Salah’s July 2025’s expiry date. “I think it’s pretty obvious, the issue is what Mo Salah feels he’s worth – whether that’s in financial terms or length of contract is completely different to what Liverpool feel at this moment in time,” Carragher told Sky Sports on Monday.
“I just hope that they meet somewhere in the middle at some stage between now and the end of the season because I am desperate to see him in a Liverpool shirt next season.”
On the complications of the situation, he speculated: “We’ve all been there as players at that stage in our careers as players where not necessarily your performances or the goals are dropping off, but you age is getting higher. Should that play a factor? It does with certain clubs and Liverpool being one.
“They look at the data, the analytics, it’s not just the emotion of Mo Salah being this great player for Liverpool. It is what he is going to do for Liverpool in the future. That’s what they’re still talking about.
“I have no problem with no contract offer being offered just yet because they’re obviously in talks, maybe they’re that far apart maybe there is no point in Liverpool making a contract offer that they know Mo Salah right now will turn down. But, as I said, as a Liverpool supporter I hope it gets sorted.”
The Bootle-born defender concluded with a reassuring statement, were the matter to remain unresolved.
“Right now people will say you can’t afford to lose him, all the supporters will be saying exactly the same. But, they said that when Kevin Keegan left. They said that when Kenny Dalglish left. Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres.
“Liverpool will miss Mo Salah whenever he leaves but you know, that is going to happen in the future and we all have to accept that.”
