Temperatures plummeted overnight as the operator is hit with issues
Merseyrail has confirmed a number of services have been affected as it deals with the cold weather in the region. The train company confirmed several services have been affected by faults and a broken down train this morning, Wednesday, November 20.
Temperatures dropped to around -1C overnight, with people waking up to find services disrupted across the Merseyrail network this morning. The operator confirmed the Ellesmere Port line was affected due to signalling problems at Hooton. Services to Ellesmere Port are now starting and terminating at Hooton.
The Southport line has also been hit with problems due to a broken down train between Ainsdale and Freshfield. This has resulted in train services for Liverpool Central starting and terminating in Formby. At the time of writing, buses are being organised to run between Southport and Formby but these are not yet in operation.

Merseyrail also confirmed trains on the Hunts Cross/Ormskirk Line has been plagued with issues this morning too. Due to a train fault at Old Roan, train services to Hunts Cross may be terminated at and started back from Aintree. Train services to Ormskirk may be suspended.
At the time of writing, buses are being organises to run between Aintree and Ormskirk although this is not yet in operation. Merseyrail was also forced to cancel its 7.05am service from Headbolt Lane to Liverpool Central and its 7.41am service from Liverpool Central to Headbolt Lane service. The operator also confirmed people can use their tickets on Arriva buses in the Southport and Ormskirk areas due to the severe disruption.
Yesterday, Tuesday, November 19, saw the operator cancel several trains due to flooding on the tracks. Trains between Hooton and Chester faced alterations or cancellations throughout the evening.
