Darwin Nunez reacted to Luis Diaz’s treble after Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has sent a message to hat-trick hero Luis Diaz following their 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. The Colombian’s second-half treble helped the Reds extend their unbeaten start in the Champions League under the new format.
Arne Slot’s side brushed aside the German champions with a comprehensive win at Anfield, with Cody Gakpo also on target. Diaz got his first of the night on the hour mark with a superb chip after an equally brilliant pass from Curtis Jones.
Gakpo doubled the Reds’ lead just two minutes later with a brave header, the 27-year-old got his second before securing the match ball as he netted twice in nine minutes. Nunez played a key role in the third goal after bursting forward from Alexis Mac Allister’s pass but lost his footing as he aimed goalwards with the deflection landing at the feet of his South American counterpart.

The win took Liverpool two points clear of Sporting CP, who stunned Manchester City – beating Pep Guardiola’s side 4-1 – with Premier League rivals Aston Villa standing as the only remaining team to take maximum points from their first three.
Reacting to a post from the official Liverpool account celebrating Diaz’s maiden Reds treble, Nunez reacted with a fire emoji.
Speaking post-match, Slot said: “I don’t know if it was that much to do with intensity but we took more risk. They overloaded the midfield a lot and we adjusted and took the risk to play one v one all over.
“And you also sometimes have to give credit to the opposition. I would love to see this from the start, but the other team then normally has intensity too.
“What I like is until now we keep producing this energy and keep going to a higher gear. Preferably we would start like this from the start but, as I said, we have to give credit to the opponent.”
