LW: Ruth Langsford opens up on ‘difficult conversation’ with son
Ruth Langsford has candidly discussed the “difficult conversation” she had with her son Jack about women’s health issues.
The 58-year-old telly star was deep in conversation with her Loose Women co-stars, including Coleen Nolan, GK Barry, and Myleene Klass, when they touched on the myriad responsibilities women shoulder, from contraception, childbirth, and eventually the menopause.
Myleene, the former Hear’Say singer, highlighted the need for men to be more involved in supporting women with contraception, revealing that her own partner had a vasectomy. The panel also observed that Generation Z parents seem to be doing a stellar job at educating their sons to be more clued-up on these matters.
Coleen shared a personal anecdote about her daughter Ciara Fensome sending her boyfriend to buy sanitary products, something she found astonishing, as it’s not something she could have imagined doing in her own youth.
Ruth then opened up about the importance of mothers educating their sons on female health, saying: “I always say as a mother of a son it is our responsibility to talk to young men about contraception, about women’s health, about periods and about the menopause,” reports the Mirror.
She went on to describe a particular incident that led to a teachable moment with her son: “I had to have a chat with Jack about the menopause because I lost my rag one day with him, it was off the scale.
“I had to then explain to him ‘let me tell you about something called the menopause, it’s why mummy’s a bit cross today’,” explained Ruth. As the conversation turned to the standard of school education, all her co-stars were in agreement that it could be better.
The youngest among them, GK Barry, shared that sex education was hardly helpful during her time at school, recounting an attempt to “put a condom on a banana” and remarking how education seems unchanged over the years.
Meanwhile, away from the camera, Ruth is navigating a very public separation from her former spouse, Eamonn Holmes. TV favourites Eamonn and Ruth, adored by fans, left many scratching their heads after they disclosed their split, following a 14-year marriage, earlier this year.
The beloved ex-This Morning presenters, who share son Jack, released a collaborative statement stating: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
Following the split announcement, GB News presenter Eamonn has since found companionship with his new girlfriend, Katie Alexander, who is 42 and works as a marriage counsellor.
Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV1, from 12:30pm.
