The three-star hotel scored the lowest possible hygiene rating after an inspection in August
A hotel in Wirral has apologised to customers after a damning inspection uncovered an infestation of mice. Leasowe Castle Hotel, on Leasowe Road, was handed the worst food hygiene rating of zero-stars following an inspection on August 19.
An extensive list of serious issues were found by officials, including a major infestation of rodents, dirty and greasy equipment and out of date food. In the report, Wirral Council found the kitchen of the hotel had an ongoing pest problem.
Despite it being known there was an issue, the report states management did nothing to resolve the issues. The standard of cleaning at the premises was “poor” with a build-up of “dirt, dust debris and grease” underneath and behind equipment and behind and on top of shelving throughout the premises.

The report opened by explaining the hotel scored the lowest mark possible and requires urgent improvement. The report said: “At the time of the inspection on Monday 12th December 2022, there was evidence of widespread activity of mice throughout the food business; under and behind equipment and on shelves where food and food equipment were being stored, in food equipment boxes, and next to takeaway packaging, in food items such as pastry cases, in pans, next to bowls, plates, on cloths used for cleaning, next to blue roll used for cleaning and hand drying and next to clingfilm and foil used to cover open foods.”
In a statement posted to Facebook, the Hotel apologised to customers for the damning report. It said: “Here at Leasowe Castle we would like to apologise to all of our past, present and future guests. We are sure you have all by now seen the articles with regards to out new food hygiene rating.
“Firstly, we would like to say sorry to everyone who we have let down with this current score. We are disappointed we have allowed this to happen to such an iconic local venue and can only apologise to those who we have let down.
“Secondly, we would like to assure all future guests and event bookers at Leasowe Castle we are currently investing heavily into new team training and food hygiene enforcements. So far, we have invested in increased pest control around the property, enforced mandatory hygiene training for all staff in back and front of house and gained help from industry professionals to implement new routines into out kitchens.
“We want all of our guests to understand that we do take this matter extremely seriously and everyone on the team is heavy hearted with regards to our score.”
