If you want to give your lawn a little extra boost without breaking the bank, you can always turn to one natural option
Maintaining a lush and vibrant lawn can be a process of trial and error, experimenting with watering routines and various fertilisers.
Yet, if you’re looking to give your lawn an extra bit of vitality without splashing out, there’s a natural solution you could consider.
The gardening experts at Suburban Lawn Sprinkler Co. suggest that Epsom salt can rectify lawn issues, acting as both a fertiliser and pest deterrent, thus promoting a “healthier life” for your lawn and garden.
There are numerous reasons why your lawn might not be exhibiting a healthy green hue, primarily due to the soil being nutrient-deficient.
Nitrogen plays a crucial role in grass growth, and its deficiency can result in slow growth and a paler shade of green, reports the Express.
Sunlight also influences your lawn’s colour. Grass growing in heavily shaded areas will likely display varying shades of green, losing its rich green colour without adequate sunlight.
Diseases can also alter the lawn’s colour in specific areas. As these diseases proliferate, the lawn’s colour transitions from light green patches to yellow and brown.
Explaining the benefits of Epsom salt for lawns, the experts stated: “Epsom salt is an organic compound that is full of beneficial minerals for lawns. Iron in Epsom salt, for example, helps grasses to grow healthy and strong. Meanwhile, the magnesium in Epsom salt balances the pH level in your grasses so that it doesn’t become too acidic.”
The experts highlighted the benefits of magnesium sulphate for grass, explaining: “The sulphur component of magnesium sulphate promotes chlorophyll production. These minerals also aid in the absorption of nitrogen and phosphorous; two essential components of healthy grass growth.”
They added that using Epsom salt ensures: “It will ultimately facilitate the lush green growth and healthy look that you’re looking to see in your yard and not ugly looking grass.”
Lawn specialists recommend using Epsom salt as a “safe, natural solution” to enhance seed germination, nutrient uptake, and the overall vitality of lawns and garden plants.
To apply Epsom salt effectively, the suggestion is to either distribute it with a spreader or dissolve it in water for use with a sprayer.
For optimal results, apply approximately half a pound of Epsom salt per 100 square feet of lawn space, doing so in the autumn or spring. They caution against summer application as “this will contribute to weed growth” while winter makes lawn treatment more challenging.
Moreover, Epsom salt is touted as a pesticide alternative too. The professionals advise: “If your flowerbeds are plagued by slugs, for example, just sprinkle some Epsom salt in the area to deter them and keep them at bay.”
