The college was forced to close one of its campuses after a fire ‘involving chemicals’ nearby
A college has confirmed one of its campuses will remain closed tomorrow after it was affected by a ‘chemical’ fire earlier today. Wirral Met College’s Conway Park Campus was evacuated after emergency services were called to Dacre Street in Birkenhead at around 5.45am on Wednesday, October 16.
People were told to keep their windows and doors shut following a fire “involving chemicals” at an industrial unit. Six fire engines were sent to the scene alongside Merseyside Police who managed traffic in the area. Three ambulances were also pictured alongside fire crews.
Wirral Met College Conway Park campus issued a statement to say it had been advised to close the building due to the incident. Classes were cancelled, including evening classes. A spokesperson said on its Facebook page: “All lessons scheduled to take place at Conway Park today have been cancelled. Our other campuses are open as normal. We will provide further updates.”

In an update on Facebook this evening, a spokesperson for Wirral Met College said the campus will remain closed on Thursday, October 17. The post read: “Due to an ongoing incident at a nearby building, our Conway Park Campus will remain closed tomorrow, 17th October. We will provide further updates as soon as we receive information from the Fire Service.
“The safety of our staff and students is our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. Our other campuses will remain open as usual.”
