Before his passing, Liam Payne shared a nostalgic photo with his One Direction bandmates on Instagram.
The 31 year old singer was found dead in a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to reports. Just weeks prior, he had posted a photo alongside his former bandmates, paying tribute to American documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.
The photo showed Liam standing alongside Morgan, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. He captioned it: “Rest in peace Morgan Spurlock it was a pleasure working with you.”
Following the news of his death, fans flooded the post with tributes.
One fan commented: “Please don’t tell me he passed away.”, reports the Mirror.
Another said: “tell me it’s not true.”
Someone else wrote: “rip liam.”
Liam rose to fame as a member of One Direction, formed on the X Factor. He first auditioned for the ITV singing show in 2008.
After being eliminated, he auditioned again in 2010 and was grouped with Niall, Harry, Louis, and Zayn, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. The former One Direction star was reportedly holidaying in Buenos Aires with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy when he tragically fell from the third floor of a hotel.
According to La Nacion, the 31 year old singer plunged from a building in the affluent Palermo area. A body was discovered in an internal patio of the hotel, prompting the hotel manager to call the police.
It is believed that Liam suffered a fall from approximately 13 or 14 metres, sustaining “very serious injuries incompatible with life.”
The local ambulance service’s manager provided a statement to TN, saying: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.”
The statement continued: “At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation.”
Liam had been sharing his adventures in Argentina on social media in the weeks leading up to the incident and even attended a concert by Niall, one of his former bandmates. Liam was just 16 years old when he shot to fame as part of the world’s biggest boyband.
