Everton news as James Tarkowski’s mistake against Newcastle is heavily criticised by Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher did not shy away from criticising Everton’s James Tarkowski for conceding a penalty against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
Ex-Everton star Anthony Gordon was presented with the opportunity to score against his former side from the penalty spot after James Tarkowski brought Sandro Tonali down.
Abdoulaye Doucoure had his opener disallowed for offside before the Toffees were handed a blow when Newcastle were awarded a penalty by VAR after Tarkowski’s needless foul on the Italian midfielder.

Tarkowski needlessly pulled Tonali to the ground inside the box and after referee Craig Pawson consulted with the on-screen monitor, a penalty was given. Fortunately for Sean Dyche, Jordan Pickford’s impressive record in saving penalties continued to deny Anthony Gordon.
However, when the penalty was awarded, Carragher slammed Tarkowski’s for his challenge on Tonali. Speaking on Sky Sports commentary, the ex-Liverpool ace said: “James Tarkowski, what are you thinking, absolutely brainless.”
As VAR were reviewing the incident, Carragher continued while Tarkowski conversed with Dyche. He added: “There’s no point talking nonsense now, absolutely ridiculous decision for Tarkowski to do that.”
The defender did, however, recover from his mistake and helped Everton keep the score level in the first-half. The Toffees came into the game after beating Crystal Palace last weekend but victory for Leicester City over Bournemouth in the earlier kick-off meant they dropped down a place to 16th.
