Jared Yankiah previously told the ECHO he was stopped and searched while helping his cousin reverse into a parking space
A Liverpool man who alleged he was racially profiled by Merseyside Police had his claim dismissed in the county court. A video uploaded to social media at the time appeared to show Jared Yankiah from Toxteth being handcuffed and held against a wall by police officers.
Speaking previously to the ECHO about the incident which happened on July 1, 2020, Mr Yankiah claimed he was stopped, handcuffed and searched by the officers while helping his cousin reverse into a parking space in Anfield. Mr Yankiah claimed he had been stopped by the officers because of racial profiling, telling the ECHO at the time: “I’ve got dreadlocks and I’m dark skinned – a black man in a predominantly white area.
“He said he was going to search me under Section 1.” After claiming he wasn’t provided with any documentation by the officers, he added: “I asked them what they suspected me of and he said he got a public nuisance call.”

Mr Yankiah and his dad Charles initially complained to both the force and then city mayor Joe Anderson who wrote to the former police and crime commissioner Jane Kennedy. The ECHO understands the complaint was withdrawn but Mr Yankiah instructed solicitors to lodge a claim against the chief constable of Merseyside Police at Liverpool County Court.
The case was heard before His Honour Judge Peter Gregory and a jury between September 23 and 26. In a written judgement seen by the ECHO, Mr Yankiah’s claim was dismissed. The judgement said: “The claimant shall pay the defendant’s costs of the claim to be assessed on the standard basis by way of detailed assessment in default of agreement and the defendant having permission for the same to be enforced up to 30% of the reasonable costs assessed.
“The claimant shall make a payment on account in respect of costs in the sum of £9,840.96 to be paid by 4pm on October 24, 2024.” Speaking previously to the ECHO about the incident, Mr Yankiah’s dad Charles said: “When my son called me to tell me what happened, I was very upset. I called the police to complain.
“It’s really hurtful and it brings tears to my eyes. I understand how my son feels when I see this video and the manner in which they behaved.”
