Liverpool agreed a £75m deal to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon last summer, but that proposed move to Anfield never materialised.
Anthony Gordon has revealed that he’s close to signing a new contract at Newcastle United. The forward was heavily linked with a return to Liverpool, having played for the Reds youth team before being released, aged 11.
Gordon went on to play for Merseyside rivals Everton before completing a big money move to the North East in January 2023. His performances for Eddie Howe’s team have seen him earn a call-up to England squads, where he was involved in Gareth Southgate’s group for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.
The 23-year-old was set for a move to Anfield this summer after Liverpool agreed a £75million deal for the winger back in June. Joe Gomez would have moved the other way, in a separate £45m transfer, but both deals collapsed after the Magpies raised funds to comply with the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules by other means.

And Gordon now looks set to extend his stay at Newcastle with the stands at St James’ Park displaying the words ‘AG [Anthony Gordon] 10’, before Saturday lunchtime’s showdown with Manchester City. That move is a (potential) hint that the club could be about to announce his contract extension.

When asked about it on TNT Sports, he said: “I don’t know. I only heard about it yesterday, so I’m just as excited as you to be fair. That’s the first time I’ve seen it.”
On the prospect of him signing a new contract, he added: “Yeah it’s close, I’m really excited. But we’ll focus on that when it comes. I’m really excited about [the game] and I want to get that out of the way first.”
