Both people have been taken to hospital
Two people were taken to hospital after they became trapped inside their cars following a crash. Emergency services were called to the M56 eastbound at around 5.45am today, Monday, September 23 following the crash between junction 14 (Ellesmere Port) and junction 12 (Runcorn).
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the crash involved two vehicles and two people were trapped inside. At around 6.25am, firefighters released one person from one of the vehicles and they were taken to hospital by paramedics.
Around half an hour later at 7.05am, a second casualty was freed and taken to hospital. The extent of both casualties’ injuries is currently unknown. There were severe delays on the M56, with traffic coming to a complete standstill for around two hours.

At around 9am there were still 120 minutes worth of delays following the crash and around eight miles of congestion. All lanes have since reopened.
